Risso's dolphin

Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) are grey whe they born and, with age, they become paler and paler for the occurrence of scars that do not disappear. Due to the low number of sightings, the knowledge on this species in the Mediterranean Sea is limited. This led the IUCN to classify as DATA DEFICIENT the Mediterranean sub population of Risso’s dolphins. For the proper conservation of the species it is necessary to broaden our knowledge on their abundance, distribution and use of the habitat within the entire Mediterranean basin.

Treaths

The specific scars caused by other Risso’s dolphins increase more and more on their bodies as they pass of the years, transforming their dorsal fins into real “digital”, unique and unmistakable. Fino ad ora sono stati identificati ben 117 Grampi nel Golfo di Taranto ma c’è ancora tanto da scoprire sulla loro presenza nella nostra area e sulle loro migrazioni. With each contribution donated to the RARE SPECIES campaign:

- we will carry out one day at sea aimed at searching for Risso’s dolphins
- we will collect important data to produce scientific publications
- the results of our campaigns will be shared through various communication channels in order to raise awareness, in the whole community, about the conservation of these large mammals.
