Short-beaked common dolphin
In the Mediterranean Sea, the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is classified as "endangered" by the IUCN. Unfortunately, in the last 50 years, its population has decreased by more than 50%, due to several anthropogenic threats. The sightings rate of this species in our research area is around 1%. Sighting them, even if just a few individuals, always brings great excitement, and gives us hope that they will return to repopulate the Gulf of Taranto. Your support is crucial to help us keep implementing our research activities and to preserve this important species.
Threats
The first sightings of Big Gold occurred in the spring of 2014 and then again in the 2015. It was never alone but never with its usual travel companions. Big Gold has lost its family and has been adopted by a group of striped dolphins. Big Gold ha perso la sua famiglia ed è stato adottato da un gruppo di stenelle. In 2019, it came back! We found it in a pod of striped dolphins but with two new common dolphin friends, Enea and Nellie.
By adopting Big Gold, this Christmas season, you will provide us with crucial support to continue our research and protection activities for these beautiful animals! In addition, the adoption kit will arrive directly at your home!
